Mary Webb was born Mary Gladys Meredith in Shropshire, England, the eldest of six children in a family proud of their Celtic descent. Her father wrote poetry and painted and shared his deep knowledge of the countryside, history, and folklore of Shropshire with his daughter. Mary was born in Leighton, Shropshire in Her Father was a schoolmaster, she began writing at the age of 10, writing fairy stories, later educated in Southport.
